Nov 2 | First Sunday Science at the Seaside Center: Seaweed - 11/2, 1:30 - 4 pm

Sunday, November 2, 1:30 – 4:00 pm.
First Sunday Science at the Seaside Center
"Ecosystem Services Provided by the Cultivation of Seaweeds and the Relationship to Shellfish Aquaculture"
Dr. Charles Yarish, University of Connecticut professor and seaweed expert
Dr. Charlie Yarish has developed an internationally known laboratory for seaweed research and aquaculture. He will talk about "Ecosystem Services Provided by the Cultivation of Seaweeds and the Relationship to Shellfish Aquaculture" beginning at 1:45 p.m. in the Innis Arden Cottage at Greenwich Point Park in Old Greenwich
Seaweeds have significant value in US agriculture as organic fertilizers, feeds, as well as functional foods, nutraceuticals, and alternative medicinal products. Yarish will present an introduction to seaweed aquaculture systems that are relevant to meeting market demands in Northeast America and improving water quality through nutrient bioextraction.  He will relate the synergies of shellfish and seaweed aquaculture.

Yarish has published extensively, including co-editing the 2014 book Long Island Sound: Prospects for the Urban Sea.

Family activities for all ages include seaweed pressing and live animals from Long Island Sound at the marine touch tank and information about obtaining shellfish permits.

This event is part of a series of presentations organized by the Bruce Museum and Greenwich Shellfish Commission held on the first Sunday of every month. The Bruce Museum Seaside Center is located on the beach at the Innis Arden Cottage in Greenwich Point Park, Old Greenwich, CT. Admission to the Park is free to all during the winter months. Nov 6 | bag it movie night

Award-winning documentary bag it:  is your life too plastic comes to Greenwich!

Community leaders at The Garden Education Center of Greenwich are hosting a screening of the award-winning environmental documentary bag it at our newly refurbished Auditorium at 130 Bible Street in Cos Cob on November 6, 2014.  Come learn about local efforts!  Greenwich recycling Advisory Board (GRAB) and Greenwich Green & Clean will co-sponsor this event with representatives and materials at the screening.
bag it follows "everyman" Jeb Berrier as he tries to make sense of our dependence on plastic bags. Although his quest starts out small, Jeb soon learns that the problem extends past landfills to oceans, rivers and ultimately human health.
The average American uses about 500 plastic bags each year, for about twelve minutes each. This single-use mentality has led to the formation of a floating island of plastic debris in the Pacific Ocean more than twice the size of Texas.
The film explores these issues and identifies how our daily reliance on plastic threatens not only waterways and marine life, but human health, too. Two of the most common plastic additives are endocrine disruptors, which have been shown to link to cancer, diabetes, autism, attention deficit disorder, obesity and infertility.
The screening at the GEC is an entertaining look at sustainability, with introduction by GEC member Lin Lavery.  Can it help start a conversation in our community, schools, and homes about plastic?  If you recognize the importance of reducing single-use plastic use for the safety of our community and environment, we hope you'll join us!
Screening Date:  November 6, 2014
Screening Time:  6:30 pm
Screening Location: The Garden Education Center of Greenwich
130 Bible Street, Cos Cob, CT, 06830
Admission: $20, $10/student
Recommended age 9+.  Parents can drop off age 12+

Audubon's Christmas Bird Count
Since the Christmas Bird Count's birth on Christmas Day of 1900 with 27 observers at 25 locations across Canada and the United States the Count has grown to include well over 63,000 counters at more than 2200 locations each year from above the Arctic Circle to the waters of the Drake Passage off Tierra del Fuego.

The widespread use of CBC data by scientists almost from the beginning of the program have helped lead to the acceptance that citizens can produce valid scientific data in a wide variety of fields. The CBC database continues to add to our understanding of the distribution and status of bird populations across North America with new data available each year.
