Dr. Charles Yarish, University of Connecticut professor and seaweed expert
Dr. Charlie Yarish has developed an internationally known laboratory for seaweed research and aquaculture. He will talk about "Ecosystem Services Provided by the Cultivation of Seaweeds and the Relationship to Shellfish Aquaculture" beginning at 1:45 p.m. in the Innis Arden Cottage at Greenwich Point Park in Old Greenwich.
Seaweeds have significant value in US agriculture as organic fertilizers, feeds, as well as functional foods, nutraceuticals, and alternative medicinal products. Yarish will present an introduction to seaweed aquaculture systems that are relevant to meeting market demands in Northeast America and improving water quality through nutrient bioextraction.  He will relate the synergies of shellfish and seaweed aquaculture.
Yarish has published extensively, including co-editing the 2014 book Long Island Sound: Prospects for the Urban Sea.
Family activities for all ages include seaweed pressing and live animals from Long Island Sound at the marine touch tank and information about obtaining shellfish permits.
This event is part of a series of presentations organized by the Bruce Museum and Greenwich Shellfish Commission held on the first Sunday of every month. The Bruce Museum Seaside Center is located on the beach at the Innis Arden Cottage in Greenwich Point Park, Old Greenwich, CT. Admission to the Park is free to all during the winter months.
