April 5 – November 9, 2014
Extreme Habitats: Into the Deep Sea
This exhibition explores the vast and extraordinary deep sea by examining both the highly adapted survival strategies utilized by creatures of the deep and the technology that enables researchers to record ground-breaking observations. Museum visitors are encouraged to view bioluminescent inhabitants of the
mesopelagic, or twilight zone, of the sea; discover the extremophiles that inhabit a hydrothermal vent; witness the bizarre appearances and adaptations of deep-sea species; and learn about the technology that makes deep-sea explorations possible.

First Sunday Bird Walk at Greenwich Point
Bring binoculars. Meet at second concession stand in Greenwich Point Park. A leisurely 2-mile walk to view birds in their habitats. Held in collaboration with Bruce Museum, Wild Wings and Audubon Greenwich. Free. For information, call 203-413-6756.

First Sunday Science at the Seaside Center.

Pasture to Pond
Wednesday, April 9, 12:30 – 1:15 pm
Look and See: Impressionism
A program especially designed for children ages 3-5 years and their adult caregivers, who will explore the Museum’s exhibition through hands-on experiences, stories and more. Children will then make their own landscape painting!  Members $5, non-members $7 per child, per class.  Parents/guardians are free.  Please make reservations by calling the Museum at 203-869-0376.

Tuesday – Friday, April 15, 16, 17, 18, 10:30 – 11:30 am
April School Vacation Workshops: Impressionist Landscapes
A series of hands on workshops for students in grades 1 – 3, who will explore the exhibition Pasture to Pond: Connecticut Impressionism, and then work on related projects.
Tuesday: Building a Landscape Painting
Wednesday: Tissue Paper Landscapes
Thursday: Pastel Landscapes
Friday: Painting Landscapes
Each workshop is a complete program, but the four projects are complementary. These inclusive workshops are suitable for students of all abilities.  For information call the Education Department (203) 413-6740. Members $5, non-members $7, per child, per day. Manhattanville MFA Creative Writers present Connecticut Impressions
Open galleries from 6:30 – 7:30 pm
In conjunction with the exhibition Pasture to Pond: Connecticut Impressionism, Manhattanville College MFA students and alumni present readings of their own poems and prose works about life in Connecticut.  Readers to include Erika Stanley’s dynamic poems on her hometown of Bridgeport; Lisa Breuning’s flash fiction on the Norwalk Maritime Museum's Jellyfish Room; former Bridgeport resident Eugenie Theall’s Pablo Neruda-inspired oceanscapes; and Greenwich resident Valerie Stauffer’s marvelous short story about Truman Capote’s student days at Greenwich High School. Diane Darst Learning to Look® Family Art Appreciation Day
This program is designed especially for families and children to foster appreciation and understanding of art related to current Museum exhibitions and based on the Learning to Look® curriculum developed by Diane W. Darst and Sue Ann Massey Williamson. Today’s program will be presented in conjunction with the Bruce Museum exhibition Pasture to Pond: Connecticut Impressionism. The lessons, led by a Learning to Look instructor beginning at 1:15 pm and repeated at 2:15 pm, will focus on landscapes.  There will be art-making activities in the Education Workshop. All activities are free with Museum admission, are fully accessible and suitable for people of all abilities and ages.

See live birds of prey from New Canaan Nature Center. Learn about the Greenwich Point as an Important Bird Area. View returning Purple Martins at their nesting gourds. Painting En Plein-Air with Sean Murtha
A series of three discussion and demonstration sessions with master wildlife artist Sean Murtha, the 2013 recipient of  Connecticut Audubon’s prestigious Artist of the Year, Birds and Their Habitat award.  Come and observe Mr. Murtha’s working process as he shows his artistic techniques and discusses his methods for developing his landscape paintings.  The Bruce Museum has commissioned a landscape painting for the permanent collection by Mr. Murtha.  Come for this unique and special experience watching a master artist at work! Program is free, but space is limited for each session and reservations are required, please call the Museum at 203-869-0376. This program is supported with a grant from the Connecticut Office of the Arts.

Annual Outdoor Crafts Festival
The Bruce Museum’s Outdoor Crafts Festival runs rain or shine on the grounds of the Museum. Over eighty artisans gather together to share their unique talents and crafts at this nationally recognized event. Juried exhibitors specialize in ceramics, jewelry, wood, wearable and decorative fiber, metalwork, leather, paper arts and glass, all available for purchase. The Festival also includes fun and educational activities for children, international cuisine, and live musical performances on both days.

Horseshoe Crabs are Coming: Project Limulus
The day will be full of exciting opportunities to participate and learn more about Project Limulus, an ongoing study of the Horseshoe Crab.  Don’t miss this opportunity to spot and tag Horseshoe Crabs on the Greenwich Point beach, discuss the research project with the people involved, and hear a presentation on the ecology of this often seen but little known creature.  There is a chance that participants will get wet during some segments of this program, please dress accordingly!  Presented by Sacred Heart University in cooperation with Friends of Greenwich Point, Town of Greenwich, and the Bruce Museum. World Science Festival Celebration
Artists’ talks in the exhibition Tale of Two Cities: New York & Beijing throughout the afternoon with Lin Yan, Wei Jia, and Michelle Fornabai.  Talks are free with Museum admission, will begin just after the hour at the gallery entrance, and will last approximately 45 minutes.


June 7 – July 6, 2014
iCreate: Teen Art
iCreate: Teen Art is an exhibition organized by the Bruce Museum’s Youth  Committee, Youth@Bruce. A final selection of 35 artworks will be displayed in the Bruce Museum Lecture Gallery along with a digital presentation of all entries. Submissions are open to all regional high school students. Students may submit up to three entries digitally to mlendenmann@brucemuseum.org by May 18, 2014.

Sign up for the 2014 Summer Painting Workshop!
July 14 – July 18, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon
Palettes, Brushes and Paint!
Designed for students ages 10 – 14 (child must have completed fourth grade). In this workshop students will study the basics of painting and create their own works of art. Themes of landscape, portraiture and mural painting will be explored. Explore Art and Science at the Bruce Museum.
The Bruce Museum is located at One Museum Drive in Greenwich, Connecticut. The Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday from 1 pm to 5 pm; closed Mondays and major holidays. Admission is $7 for adults, $6 for students up to 22 years, $6 for seniors and free for members and children under 5 years. Individual admission is free on Tuesday. The Bruce Museum Seaside Center is a beachside museum located in the Innis Arden Cottage at Greenwich Point Park, Old Greenwich, CT. The Seaside Center mission is to educate visitors about the ecology of Long Island Sound and environmental issues.
